On 14th May 2025, Level 5 and 6 construction management students from Global Banking School (GBS) took part in a unique, hands-on learning experience with a visit to Wood Wharf, one of London’s most ambitious development projects, led by the Canary Wharf Group (CWG). This site visit is a significant part of GBS’s ongoing commitment to helping our students connect academic learning with practical experiences.

Students and staff spent the morning exploring the expansive Wood Wharf site. The visit provided them with a valuable opportunity to experience life on a major construction site and to learn about various career opportunities available within this evolving industry. For many students, it was their first exposure to a live construction site of this scale. It offered a real insight into the complex layers of planning, design, safety and management that define the construction industry today.

The day began with a welcome session and safety briefing, followed by an engaging presentation and quiz led by CWG representatives. Students also learned about the history and mission of Canary Wharf Group, as well as phases of development, sustainability standards and career options within the organisation. There was a clear focus on the qualities and skills needed to work in a modern construction environment, especially one committed to innovation, sustainability and smart city planning.

The day progressed with career discussions with trade contractor volunteers who shared personal experiences and highlighted diverse roles students can pursue within the construction sector. From project management and sustainability officers to site engineers and logistics coordinators, students got a clear view of the varied career pathways that exist.

The most memorable part of the day was a guided tour of the live construction site at Wood Wharf. Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), students had the opportunity to observe the project up close and see how construction managers collaborate with various teams in order to bring large-scale projects to life. They also caught a glimpse into how technology and sustainability are being integrated into the project.

Cristina Ghijdivschi, a GBS construction management student and aspiring construction manager, described the experience as transformative:

“[I'm] grateful for the opportunity to visit the Wood Wharf construction site — an inspiring and insightful experience that helped us connect our academic learning with real-world construction practices. Experiences like this motivate us to keep learning, growing and preparing for a meaningful future in the industry.”

Wood Wharf is part of Canary Wharf’s continued expansion and represents one of the largest privately-owned development sites in central London. Once completed, it will offer over 3,600 homes, two million square feet of office space, retail units, public parks, a school and medical facilities, all built to the highest environmental standards.

GBS would like to thank Canary Wharf Group for hosting this opportunity and, in particular, Paul Humphries, Helen Coxhead and Angie Ward for supporting our students throughout this exciting visit.
