What is the difference between graduate jobs, graduate schemes, and entry-level jobs?

Graduate Jobs – A graduate job is a position that someone who has recently graduated with the qualifications to take on the role — and are also known as ‘direct entry jobs’. Graduate jobs are more common than graduate schemes, and most university leavers take this pathway. Graduate jobs are not limited to larger companies who have the capacity to develop full graduate development programmes, so you will find that they are offered by organisations of all sizes.

Graduate schemes – These can be defined as work-based development and training programmes specifically for graduates. Larger organisations are more likely to run graduate schemes as they have the resources to provide these longer-term programmes, which often last 2-3 years. Most graduate schemes lead to permanent full-time positions within the organisation upon completion.

Entry-level jobs – Simply put, an entry-level job is a one that is deemed suitable for someone without much industry experience. These positions are not aimed directly at graduates, but many graduates find them to be a useful route towards their desired profession or preferred industry sector.

The available resources for finding graduate opportunities are numerous; most come in the form of online job boards. These vary from general to industry-specific online platforms. What are job boards, and how are they useful to me?

Online job boards are platforms used by most employers to advertise their vacancies, to the widest audience available. Jobs boards provide employers with the opportunity to access millions of potential candidates for any position.

You will find that some job boards are focused on specific sectors or regions, while others are much broader in scope. Here are some tips for getting the most out of job boards:

  • If you have a particular industry in mind, look for a job board that focuses particularly on that industry, as you will have much more targeted search results.
  • Apply several filters to your search, such as location, contract type, employment level and salary. The more you narrow down your search, the more likely you are to find a suitable role.
  • Note down some key words or phrases that often appear in the types of jobs you are searching for. Type them into the search bar and you will get yet more targeted results.
